Poggio Antico is a medium sized winery on the southern side of the hill of Montalcino. The vineyards are very high in altitude, over 500 m (1640 ft) and benefit of important diurnal temperature variation. Limestone in the soil enhances both flavors and fenolics in the grapes.
The winery produces several labels. “Altero” is a Brunello di Montalcino coming from selected single vineyards. The wine, tasted in November 2018, has a very intense nose with ripe fruit, floral and spicy notes; it is powerful on the palate with firm and ripe tannins, has long-lasting fruity flavors and a typical savoriness. It is very enjoyable now, but can undoubtedly age further in the bottle.
