Between Siena and Florence lies a place called Chianti — so central to Tuscan wine culture that several of its towns carry the name itself: Gaiole in Chianti, Radda in Chianti, Castellina in Chianti, Greve in Chianti.
But here’s the catch: the wine simply labeled “Chianti” isn’t actually made here. Only Chianti Classico can be produced within this historic territory — and you’ll recognize it by the Black Rooster (Gallo Nero) on the label.
The wine labeled simply “Chianti,” on the other hand, is made elsewhere in Tuscany — outside the Chianti territory itself. I’m not pulling your leg; it does sound like a riddle, I know — but that’s exactly how it works. Come along with me and I’ll walk you through it.
The Chianti territory, however tightly defined, is far from uniform — it stretches across 8 different municipalities. Winemaking here is an ancient tradition, one that earned legal recognition centuries ago: the Bando di Cosimo III of 1716 was the first law in the world to introduce the very concept of denomination of origin.
Chianti Classico is made predominantly from Sangiovese (at least 80% by regulation) and comes in three styles: the youngest wine, an easy companion for everyday meals; the Riserva, a more structured wine aged longer, which evolves beautifully with time; and the Gran Selezione, meant to represent the finest expression an estate has to offer.
Every municipality, every corner of the territory, produces its own style of Chianti Classico — shaped by soil, altitude, microclimate, and exposure. Among the many producers you’ll find ancient castles standing alongside modern wine estates and small, family-run vineyards.
What makes Chianti Classico so fascinating is just how many styles it holds within a single name — not only shaped by where it’s grown, but by each producer’s own approach, the grapes they favor, and the category they choose. There’s a Chianti Classico out there for everyone, and one suited to nearly any occasion or pairing you have in mind.
The landscape itself is just as varied. Within just a few kilometers, gentle green hills lined with cypress trees give way to rocky, forested highlands — and along the way you’ll pass weathered farmhouses, elegant villas, and fortified castles.
