Badia a Coltibuono

Viticulture did survive and improve from the Middle Age to modern times thanks to the Monasteries. In Tuscany a place where you can still breath the Monks’ tradition is Badia a Coltibuono (Abbey of good harvest), that was founded in the XI century. The family Stucchi Prinetti, current owner of the Badia, has improved viticulture and wine production, keeping in mind that ancient tradition.

The winery and its vineyards lie in the territory of Gaiole in Chianti, on the eastern border of Chianti land on very high hills, surrounded by woods. Cooler climate conditions allow for a perfect slow ripeness of the grapes, retaining precious acidity in the fruit, that turns into characterful wines. Sangiovese is the main grape here, but also other ancient local grape varieties are grown and given their role in the wines.

Badia a Coltibuono is an organic winery. The winemaking philosophy is traditional, aimed at a style of purity and elegance. No international varieties are blended with Sangiovese and large barrels are used to age wine before bottling.

I had the chance to taste some recent and past vintages, which I enjoyed a lot.
