With its roots in the Bolgheri countryside, the family has always been dedicated to agriculture, but took a turning point in 1998, following the wake of the Bolgheri wine success. Bordeaux became the inspiring model and with the 2001 harvest Le Fornacelle released its own labels of Bolgheri wines.

The winery is a family business, managed in 4 hands by Stefano Billi and his wife Silvia Menicagli. I really appreciated the reds among the current vintages, that were presented during a lunch in Florence on February, 21.

Zizzolo. Bolgheri Rosso DOC 2018

It is a simple wine, that matures only 6 months in oak barrels; it is a winning sample of its category for bing so easy to drink. Intense purple color, the nose strongly insists on fresh fruit: blackberry and red currant; herbs and spicy notes on the background. Rounded and well balanced on the palate, with a very precise finish.

Guardaboschi. Bolgheri Superiore DOC 2015

Blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot with more than one year of aging in barrique; it is a full-bodied wine, suitable for further aging. Deep ruby, with pronounced spicy and balsamic aromas: cedar, mint, resin, pepper, cardamom, surrounding a fruity core of blackcurrant. It has an elegant texture of tannins, which are ripe and well integrated, making the drink progressive. Intense flavor of fruit and saline sensation in the long finish.

Foglio38. Bolgheri Superiore DOC 2015

Cabernet Franc, matured 18 months in barrique. It stands out for class and depth, highlighted by the dynamic development on the palate. Deep ruby with purple rim. Mint, juniper, Mediterranean herbs stand out on the nose with some blueberry and a touch of graphite. The flavor is very intense with a medium-full body and a refined character, that resembles a wine from Margaux. It gets thinner in the progression, thanks to the precious contribution of acidity, while experiencing a great amplification in the finish, reminiscent of orange, balsamic and smoky notes.

Erminia. Toscana Merlot IGT 2015

Inky color with powerful nose. Riminds of white chocolate, blackberry and raspberry along with cloves, nutmeg and undergrowth. It has full body with pronounced fruity flavor; it moves with grace on the palate though, thanks to a certain saltiness sensation, that vibrates in the finish.

Zizzolo (white). Bolgheri Vermentino DOC 2018

Pale straw-yellow with a clean nose of fresh oregano and lime peel. Light-bodied, well balanced to taste.

Fornacelle Bianco Toscana IGT 2018

Sémillon grape, fermented and matured in oak. Deep lemon yellow with rich and captivating nose. It boasts mimosa, apricot, saffron, iodine and candied fruit. Interesting contrast between the rounded creamy texture and the flicker of saline flavor that emerges in the finish.

The estate was founded in the territory of Bolgheri (Tuscany) with the redemption of the land belonging to the Count della Gherardesca, that used to be worked in sharecropping until 1945 by the family of Giulio Batistoni, grandfather of the current owner, Stefano Billi.
